SNOWSHOE 101

WE HAVE A SNOWSHOE LESSON FOR 
THOSE WHO ARE NEW TO THE SNOWSHOEING


A TWO HOUR STOP and GO WALK AROUND CAMPGROUNDS IN BIG COTTONWOOD


We covered the basics about learning how to:
  • How to put on and take off snowshoes.  
  • How to climb and descend.   
  • How to adjust poles and when to lengthen or shorten.  
  • Hiking on hard pack and powder snow.  
  • Snowshoe sizes.   
  • Differences between men's and women's snowshoes. 
  • Avalanche danger on 30 to 45 degree slopes.  
  • Dressing in layers.   
  • Importance of drinking water to prevent frost bite.
  • Sun protection wearing sunglasses and using sunscreen.
  • Seeing how people Winter Camp.

ESCAPE FROM SMOG LAKE CITY


We enjoyed a warm December hike up to an overlook of Smog Lake City.   This hike is kid and dog friendly.

SKYLINE NATURE TRAIL

SOUTHERN LOOP


DESCRIPTION: We begin at the trailhead at the intersection of Wakara Way, Colorow Road and walked up to the Bonneville Shoreline trail.  Take the first trail up.  Follow the main trail around the outer fence Red Butte Garden fence line.   At the fork, there is a trail on the right that climbs to the Living Room.  Take the trail to the left following the fence line.   After reaching a ridge the trail descends to the Red Butte stream and a bridge.
Take the road down and turn left on the Bonneville Shoreline trail.



RATINGS: Moderate
HIKE TIME: 1 1/2 hours 
MILEAGE: 3 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 550'
DOGS love this hike.  Owners must clean up after them.
GEAR: Water, hiking pole, snacks, camera, hat, and sunscreen.

FRARY PEAK ~ Antelope Island

Trailhead
DIRECTION:  Get a map of the Island at the entrance booth and drive to the trailhead.  Take the road to Garr Ranch,  look for the Frary Peak road to the right.

RATINGS: INTERMEDIATE
MILEAGE: 3.6 miles to the summit
ELEVATION GAIN: 2,500'



SUMMIT
HIKE TIME:  Allow 5 hours
FEE: $10 per vehicle (seniors $5)
RESTROOM:  Available at the horse parking area on the road to Frary Peak.





DOGS are allowed on the trail with short leash.
DIRECTIONS:  From SLC take I -15 north,
take exit 332 Antelope Drive and turn left, keep driving straight till you reach Antelope Island State Park.

DESCRIPTION:  Enjoy a hike through the foothills and woods of Corner Canyon, to a waterfall.
TRAILHEAD: COYOTE HOLLOW 










RATINGS: Moderate
MILEAGE: 2.75 mile loop
ELEVATION GAIN:  450'

HIKE TIME: 2 1/2 to 3 hours















NO DOGS allowed in Ghost Falls watershed area

ADAMS CANYON in AUTUMN


GOD has blessed us with some Amazing Autumn leaves while hiking this obstacle course. The canyon trail, follows a bubbling stream, through a forest of firs, scrub oaks, box elders, and maples. 


On the trail, you will pass by a huge fir tree, cross a wooden bridge, follow hidden trails, climb over rocky areas, walk along narrow ledges, walk under huge logs, step on stones across the stream, and cool off by Adams Canyon Falls.



RATINGS: MODERATE PLUS
ELEVATION GAIN: 1,212'
HIKE TIME: 3 1/2 hours
MILEAGE: 3.9 miles round trip


NO RESTROOMS available.
DOGS on leash.  Please bring clean up bags.


DIRECTIONS from SALT LAKE CITY
take I-15 north,
(after passing Lagoon) 
take exit 324 - US 89 (drive north)
when you drive through OAK HILLS DRIVE intersection,
prepare to turn right on the next frontage road,  make another right on EAST SIDE DR (drive south), you find a dirt parking area above the intersection of OAK HILLS DRIVE.


DIRECTIONS from OGDEN take US 89 south toward Farmington,  turn left at Cherry Lane intersection,
turn right on Valley View Drive (drive south),  turn left on 1200 North (drive west),  this will become Eastside Drive (drive south)   Look for a lot of cars parked by a dirt parking area.
