ESCAPE from SMOG LAKE CITY

It was wonderful escaping the toxic smog and traveling up Big Cottonwood Canyon where God gave a sunny BLUE SKY day.   Not a single cloud in the sky!

No dogs are allowed in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

FRARY PEAK

A new section of trail has been created from Antenna Hill to Frary Peak.  No longer do you need to climb the steep staircase up the hill.

DIRECTION:  Get a map of the Island at the entrance booth and drive to the trailhead.  Take the road to Garr Ranch,  look for the Frary Peak road to the right.
RATINGS: INTERMEDIATE
MILEAGE: 3.6 miles to the summit
ELEVATION GAIN: 2,500'
HIKE TIME:  Allow 5 hours
FEE: $10 per vehicle (seniors $5)
RESTROOM:  Available below the Frary parking area.

DOGS are allowed on the trail with short leash.
DIRECTIONS:  From SLC take I -15 north,
take exit 332 Antelope Drive and turn left, keep driving straight till you reach Antelope Island State Park.

ANIMALS: We saw a herd of 100 Bison cross the Frary Peak trail.  From our car we saw Antelope.

SKYLINE NATURE LOOP

DESCRIPTION:  Enjoy a hike around the outside parameter of Red Butte Gardens.   
From the south side of the Natural History Museum, take the fence trail up the hill.
Take the main trail following the fence line.   The trail drop down to the Red Butte road.
You have a choice of climbing the hill or taking the Red Butte road back.

RATINGS: MODERATE
MILEAGE: 3 mile loop
KID FRIENDLY

DOGS ARE WELCOME
NO RESTROOMS

DIRECTIONS: WAKARA WAY and COLOROW ROAD, SLC, UT

HIKE to the LIVING ROOM

DESCRIPTION: Park by the Bonneville Shoreline trail, near the gate to Red Butte Gardens, on Colorow Road and Wakara Way. Follow the shoreline trail south. At Georges Hollow take the trail on the left side up to the upper shoreline trail and turn right. You'll find the main trail to the Big Beacon and Living Room around the bend.

  • MILEAGE: 1.3 miles each way
  • ELEVATION: 950' gain
  • KIDS & DOGS enjoy this trail.
  • NO RESTROOMS are available
  • HIKE TIME: 2 1/2 hours
  • DIRECTIONS: From Foothill Blvd, near the U of U, follow signs to Red Butte Gardens. Drive up Wakara Way and turn right on Colorow Dr and park.

ADAMS CANYON




Enjoy Autumn leaves while hiking an obstacle course.
The canyon trail, follows a bubbling stream, through a forest of firs, scrub oaks,
box elders, and maples. On the trail, you will pass by a huge fir tree, cross a wooden bridge, follow hidden trails, climb over rocky areas, walk along narrow ledges, walk under huge logs, step on stones across the stream, and cool off by Adams Canyon Falls.
RATINGS: MODERATE PLUS
ELEVATION GAIN: 1,212'
HIKE TIME: 4 hours
MILEAGE: 3.9 miles round trip

GHOST FALLS





















DESCRIPTION: Enjoy a walk through a forest to Ghost Falls. Travel the Bonneville Shoreline trail down the hill, connect with Canyon Hollow trail, turn left on the Burnham Creek trail, right on the Gas Line trail, left on the Ghost Falls trail.  After seeing Ghost Falls, continue on the trail, take a left and join the Canyon Hollow trail and head back to Coyote Hollow trailhead.
TRAILHEAD: COYOTE HOLLOW 
RATINGS: Moderate

MILEAGE: 2.75 mile loop
ELEVATION GAIN:  500'
NO DOGS allowed in Ghost Falls watershed area
RESTROOMS available


DIRECTIONS: Travel toward the Draper Temple,
from Highland Drive, take RAMBLING ROAD,
turn right on MIKE WEIR DRIVE,
turn left toward the Draper Temple parking,
turn right on CANYON VISTA LN.
turn left on GREY FOX DR.
turn right on COYOTE HOLLOW CT.
and find a place to park.

WILLOW LAKE

WILLOW LAKE

DESCRIPTION:  The Willow Heights Trail is great Autumn hike.  The trail begins with a steep climb, but levels out.  We took the trail counter-clockwise around the lake.  
RATINGS: NEWBIES
MILEAGE: 2.15 total circling the lake.
ELEVATION GAIN:  600'

RESTROOM:  Use the restroom at Mill D South Fork when driving up the canyon.
NO DOGS ALLOWED IN BIG COTTONWOOD 
DIRECTIONS:  Enter Big Cottonwood Canyon at Fort Union Blvd. and Wasatch Blvd; SLC, Utah.   Drive 12.1 miles up and park on the side of the road.   Look for the stone trail marker on the north side of the Big Cottonwood Canyon road.

LITTLE COTTONWOOD TRAIL

Enjoy a hike by the Little Cottonwood Creek.   This is a fun, granite trail with large boulders and old structures.   The trail is shared with mountain bikers.
RATINGS: Moderate

ELEVATION GAIN:  1300'

MUELLER PARK ADVENTURE


Enjoy hiking 3 1/2 miles to Elephant Rock overlook.  The trail is shared with joggers, mountain bikers and dogs.
RATINGS: Moderate
ELEVATION GAIN: 968'
NO RESTROOMS
TOTAL HIKE TIME: 4 hours
DIRECTIONS from SLC:
  • Take I-15 north to Bountiful exit 315, 
  • turn right on 2600 South and drive up the hill, 
  • the road curves left becoming Orchard Drive (north), 
  • turn right on 1800 South and drive straight to the mountains. 
  • Park outside Mueller Park at Maple Ridge Drive and Mueller Park Road.



GEAR: Bring a jacket,  hat, bring water, energy snacks, sack lunch and camera.
